Pros |
This is a Ray Harryhausen classic; maybe not as popular as "Jason and the Argonauts" (are you listening Sony?) but a classic none-the-less. I found myself staring at the wonderful creatures he created (Cyclops, two-headed roc, dragon) and how they performed; the patience and attention to detail that man had was truly incredible. There are a number of excellent extras on this disc that alone are worth the price including two interviews with Ray (one modern) and what has to be described as a huge love fest for him by the great number of movie people he influenced/inspired. |
Cons |
The story is simple, the acting is not-so-good and there's no blood & gore. Even though this is on Blu-Ray, don't expect a pristine picture like what we get today with modern equipment. They have done a good job with restoration of the sound though; purists still have a mono track if they just have to have it. Unfortunately, today's youth will probably not appreciate this film since they are now used to modern movies with CGI. |

Recommendation |
This is a movie that should be on all film-buffs shelves. Ray Harryhausen, the creator of the stop-motion special effects, is considered by most as the father of special effects. This is the first film he made in color and what he accomplished in his day is stunning; you have to remember this was filmed in 1958 before the word "computer" was in anbody's vocabularies. Even if you don't get it on Blu-Ray you should add the regular DVD to your collection. |
