Plot

A brother and sister have parted ways after their father died while they were rock climbing. She remained a climber, he gave up the sport. When she is trapped on K2 and the amount of time she can survive is limited, he must forgo his fears and organize a rescue.

Pros

The number one reason to watch this movie is the stunning video and scenery! The video is crisp and the object of the movie, the mountain, is the perfect subject for dvd and high definition TVs. Bill Paxton plays the perfect jerk and Robin Tunney is certainly worth risking your neck to save.

Cons

The plot/subplots for this film are not original:
  • Somebody willing to risk their life to save a member of their family at all costs.
  • A filthy rich man willing to do anything and sacrifice anyone to attain a goal for ego, money and above all else, survival.
  • One person who's out strictly for revenge against someone with a secret past.
  • Lots of danger and life defying events.

Extras

  • Martin Campbell and Lloyd Phillips Commentary
  • HBO Making-Of Special
  • Search and Rescue Tales
  • National Geographic Channel's Quest for K2
  • Talent Files

Recommendation

I never wanted to climb a ridiculously high and dangerous mountain before seeing this movie; this film reinforced the sanity of that decision. There's not a lot of originality here other than the movie takes place on top of a treacherous mountain. This film was shot on the side of a mountain, not in a sound stage with tons of CGI, and the actors had to learn how to climb. The mountain and how well it is shot is the true star of this film.
