Plot

Uzumaki is apparently Japanese for spiral. A young woman first notices that her boyfriend's father is acting strangely while staring at a snail on a fence. He won't be the only villager to become obsessed with items shaped like spirals. What is happening in this village?

Pros

The Japanese have a way of making horror movies more interesting than we (Americans) do. We desire lots of violence/gore, some nudity/sex and a well-defined explanation at the end (unless, of course, the movie people are already thinking sequel); they do not and this film is a prime example of that. I enjoyed how the viewer was slowly pulled in and the surprise and abrupt ending.

Cons

Now you know what not to expect and the ending will leave many people dissatisfied.

Recommendation

Japanese horror films are not for everyone but this might not be a bad movie to start with. You have good character development and a mystery that, at least for this film, isn't completely solved; I for one would like to see this story continued. And, while you're at it, see if you can spot spirals on the screen at different times during the film.
