A successful Roman General ( Hopkins ) returns from victory with the Queen of the Goths (Lange) and her three sons as prisoners. He orders her oldest son sacrificed before turning down the leadership role in Rome . After basically appointing Saturninus (Cumming) the new leader, all hell breaks lose as he decides to marry the Queen and then she plots the General’s demise to revenge the death of her son. This is based on a play by Shakespeare.

This is unlike any other movie/play you’re likely to see based on a story by Shakespeare. Along with the clothing and language of the period, you’ll also find a number of 20th Century items; cars and motorcycles amongst the horse, shotguns, jazz bands, pool tables, etc. The video and audio quality is outstanding and, as usual, Hopkins shines in his role as the lead. You have a little bit of everything in this story; murder, revenge, rape, plots, subplots, etc.

It runs for over 2.5 hours and even though some of the props are fairly modern, the language spoken is not. If you struggle either reading or listening to Shakespeare’s works, 2.5 hours of it might just wear you out.

If you like Shakespeare’s works, this is a no brainer. Forget about the modern stuff in the film and just enjoy everything. If you’re not a fan, rent/borrow it. Maybe this will help introduce more people to his work. After watching the movie, take the time to check out the "Making-of" Documentary and Juile Taymor's talk at Columbia University. If I was an actor, something I am not, Anthony Hopkins would be te first actor on my list I would want to work with.
