Plot

The sun is dying so the people on Earth need to find a solution before it's too late for them. They send the ship Icarus, but it failed in it's mission to reignite the Sun with a giant bomb and nobody on Earth knows what happened to it. So, eight more people are sent up on the Icarus II, another small ship strapped to a huge bomb. If they fail, everyone on Earth will die. Can they accomplish what the first crew could not?

Pros

For those of you that hate when a movie drags on because of character development, this film is for you. Once this film starts it only slows down once or twice to catch its breath before cranking back up again; this movie has so many twists it might leave you dizzy. The acting is decent and even though reality has to be altered from time-to-time, you won't be bored and you'll also get to see how good your TV handles really bright colors.

Cons

The downside for the lack of character development is you simply don't care if any of them get killed (ok, there's one person that you eventually want to die just because he's a jerk). You can see how this film attempts to be philosophical/theological but the problem is it never slows down enough for that to sink in. And where's the extras? All they really added was a bunch of short clips that they put on the web. All new movies should be required to include a making of featurette of at least thirty minutes.

Extras

  • Commentary With Director Danny Boyle
  • Commentary With Scientist Dr. Brian Cox
  • Web Diaries
  • Deleted Scenes
  • "Dad's Dead" Short Film
  • "Mole Hills" Short Film

Recommendation

If you like science fiction movies with plenty of action this is definitely worth checking out. If nothing else you can't say the writer wasn't willing to go against the grain when it comes to plot and especially the ending. I'm a little confused with some of the things that happened in the film but it was still a fun little ride that might become easier to figure out after multiple viewings. Then again, probably not.

Trivia: I knew I recognized the name Icarus from somewhere so I looked it up on Wikipedia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Icarus). To make a long story short, he was a person in mythology that died because he flew too close to the Sun. Personally, if I was on that crew, I would prefer that the ship be named after something a bit more positive. Wouldn't you?
