Plot

A young up-and-coming singer (a 19 year old Diane Lane) is abducted by a gang during one of her concerts. Her ex-boyfriend (Paré), manager and current boyfriend (Moranis) team up with an out-of-work army veteran (Madigan) to rescue her from the gang and it's bad-ass leader (Dafoe).

Pros

I own the soundtrack on LP, cassette and CD and the movie on VHS, DVD and HD-DVD; need I say more? The two strongest songs were written by Jim Steinman; if you hear a song that is telling a story and lasts at least 6 minutes there's a good chance he wrote it regardless of who's singing it (Meatloaf, Bonnie Tyler, Celine Dion, etc). The movie is laced with enough humor and action to keep things flowing smoothly, the video is extremely sharp and the soundtrack is worth cranking up. Can anyone play the role of an annoying little troll better than Moranis?

Cons

The acting is average at best but it was one of the first major moves for almost all of the cast and, if you look at it critically, they didn't have the best possible lines to work with and the plot has more than a few holes. And will somebody please tell me what is that thing they have Dafoe wearing?

Recommendation

This film is trashed by it's detractors and unabashedly loved by it's fans; obviously I fall into the latter category. At the time of this review this film was rated 6.3 at IMDb on a scale of 1-10; 30% of the votes were 9-10, 21.7% had it rated 5 or below. This film has a large cult following and is well worth checking out if you like good music. Even if you don't, it is fun seeing so many recognizable actors so early in their careers.

The lady dancing mostly clothed in the bar Torchie's (Marine Jahan) was the body double for the dancer in "Flashdance".
