Plot

Robin of Locksley (Costner) escapes from a Turkish prison with Azeem (Freeman), a Moore. Upon his return to England he finds his father murdered and the country in turmoil due to the rule of the Sheriff (Rickman). You should know the rest.

Pros

Costner may be the main star of this film but Rickman steels the show as the evil sheriff. Freeman shines as his friend and sidekick and Mastrantonio makes a lovely and intelligent Marion. And it does have one of my all-time movie quotes: "This is grain which any fool can eat. But which the Lord intended a more divine means of consumption. Let us give praise to our maker and glory to his bounty by learning about beer". And they didn't skimp when it came to extras.

Cons

This is a modern version of an old story but it simply doesn't stand up to the classic Errol Flynn The Adventures of Robin Hood; they replaced the fun of that film with a more serious script. Kevin Costner does not make a good Robin Hood and I'm not all that thrilled with the alterations they made to the original story.

Recommendation

This is a good movie just not a great one. The special effects are well done and it's certainly worth watching for Rickman's performance alone.
