Plot |
A rich kid (Sheen) drops out of college and joins the infantry during the Vietnam War. He felt he should do his part; the poor and uneducated shouldn't have to be the only ones sacrificing for their country. You watch him grow from a rookie to a veteran as he faces all of the nuances of war.

Pros |
Stone didn't pull any punches or candy-coat what happened during the war and as you look over the cast, he got some damn good people to star in this film. You get to see what war and stress do to people; both good and bad things. You also have a conflict between a Bad NCO (Berenger) and a Good NCO (Dafoe). Has Dafoe ever done a bad job in a movie? |
Cons |
This is not a family film or one you'll want to watch with your girlfriend/wife; this is purely a guy flick (language, drug use, violence, more language, more violence, etc.). |
Extras |
- Commentary by Director Oliver Stone
- Commentary by Military Supervisor Captain Dale Dye
- "Tour of the Inferno" Documentary Featuring Interviews with the Director, Cast and Crew (definitely take the time to watch this)
- Photo Gallery
- Collectible Booklet
- TV Spots
- Theatrical Trailer

Recommendation |
This movie is not for the faint of heart and "entertaining" isn't the word I would use to describe it. Educational would be more appropriate (especially since this is based on Stone's own experiences in the war). This is not a typical feel-good war movie with heroes and a happy ending and is considered by many to be the best one ever filmed. You can't have a war movie collection that does not include this title. |
