Plot |
This is Tim Burton's remake of the 1967 classic by the same name; Tim just made this his own film. An astronaut (Wahlberg) crash lands on a planet while hunting for his chimp companion that disappeared into a space storm. You'll never guess what he found on the planet?

Pros |
I like what he did with this movie. It's amazing how far makeup and special effects have come in the last 30 years; all the apes looked incredible. This also provides a nice twist to how the planet became run by apes in the first place. There are some very strong performances by Roth/Duncan for the soldiers and Carter/Giamatti for the civilians. |
Cons |
I only have two real complaints with this film. First off, I'm still not sold on Wahlberg playing the lead; he just doesn't seem like the right fit. Second, I know the ending was specifically made for a sequel that isn't apparently in the future, but I want all the guys out there to ask themselves a simple question when the film is over. Would you have done what Wahlberg did or would you have stayed put? Yeah, I would have stayed too. |

Recommendation |
Yet another attempt at a remake that, in my opinion, the critics were far too harsh on. Yes there was a lot of hype but this film was considerably better than most gave it credit for. I've always wondered why people insist on remaking classics knowing up front that no matter how good of a job they do; diehard fans are always going to pick the remake apart. This is one remake I'm glad Tim took the time to make. |
