Plot

Thomas Hutter is sent to the Carpathian Mountains to visit Count Orlok and offer him a building in town to take up residence in. Unfortunately, Count Orlok is also a vampire.

Pros

This is the first vampire movie and as such, a classic. Fortunately all the copies of this film were not lost do to a legal battle (you can read the details at IMDb if you're curious).

Cons

This is an 80+ year old silent film and it shows. Since it is a silent film, most of the acting is over-the-top and even a bit comical.

Extras

  • Audio Essay by Lokke Heiss
  • Then & Now Photograph Featurette
  • The "Phantom Carriage Ride" Featurette
  • Photo Gallery

Recommendation

Nobody can claim to have a horror collection that doesn't include this movie. It's quite impressive what they were able to do in films made in 1922. Take the time to check out the commentary track; since the movie is only 81 minutes long it doesn't take that long to watch it twice and the track is quite informative.
