Plot

You've got the forces of Light (the good guys) and the forces of Darkness (the bad guys). These groups consist of creatures including shape shifters and vampires. Centuries ago they fought to a draw once reality set in that one side could not prevail over the other. They reached a truce and to ensure the truce was carried out, they have two watches; the Night Watch (monitored by the forces of light) and the Day Watch (monitored by the forces of Darkness). Guess which watch this covers? There are two other groups involved; humans and "others". As usual, humans have no idea what's going on and can't see these creatures. Others are humans that are scarce but are able to see and interact with these creatures. Eventually they must choose a side.

Pros

Strong visuals, lots of violence and gore, and once you figure out what is what, a very good storyline.

Cons

It's quite difficult to follow in the beginning, just let it unfold. That and this is the first movie in a trilogy so it really doesn't end. Hopefully they'll be kind enough to release the other two movies in the States (this is a Russian film).

Extras

  • Commentary by Timur Bekmambetov (Subtitled in English, Spanish, and French)
  • Commentary by Novelist Sergei Lukianenko (Subtitled in English, Spanish, and French)
  • Extended Ending ("The Roof") with optional commentary by director Timur Bekmambetov (option to view in English or Russian audio)
  • Sneak Peak at upcoming "Night Watch" sequels
  • Bonus Trailers

Recommendation

This isn't you're standard "fluff" vampire movie. You have to pay attention and follow it to the end. If you do, it's an excellent ride. If you have a short attention span, pick up something else. I'm guessing the more times I watch it, the better it will get. And hey, unlike most the crap coming out of Hollywood lately, this is an "original" idea, not a remake or another sequel.
