Plot
A brother and sister go to visit their father's grave. They are attacked by a zombie and the movie quickly picks up from there with seven people trapped in a house. |
Pros
Not only is this the ground setter for zombie movies, but it proves that they can be done without gallons of fake blood and graphic special effects. Instead horror can be effectively accomplished with suspense, a good script, effective camera angles and acting. This film uses communication similar to the way the original "War of the Worlds" to add to the tension; in this case it was with TV broadcasts as opposed to radio. |
Cons
This was filmed on a low budget even by 1968 standards, so don't expect anything close to what you get today. And as far as the video quality goes, it's not the best; there are marks on the film and some skips. Having said that, I don't consider it a negative; this is an old film and those discrepancies just adds to the mood. I also suspect there weren't many, if any, "mainstream" movies in 1968 where the lead character was an African American. |

Recommendation
This is the first, and fortunately not the last, film by George Romero. It almost certainly set the standard for zombie films. You can find this movie in just about every "horror" compilation set available and in numerous single movie discs, so I suspect the video and sound quality will vary. This version is not bad but there wasn't much if any work done to improve it from the original. If you're truly a fan of horror movies and, for some reason haven't already seen it, this is a must. |
