This movie is based on a true story taking place in South America in the 18th Century. Spanish Jesuits, led by Jeremy Irons, are converting and protecting a native Indian tribe from slavery. Spain sells the land to Portugal, Portugal wants the Jesuits gone, so a representative of the Catholic church comes in to resolve the situation; that alone should tell you things end badly.

A strong lineup for the cast, just not much for them to do. The real stars are the Indians and they do not speak English. I guess the highlight for me was the brief time that Cherie Lunghi was on screen.

This movie is slow. I guess one shouldn't expect a lot of action when the main characters are priests (unless, of course, when they're stirring wars in the name of religion).

If you like historical dramas with stunning visuals then check this film out. If you're looking for lots of action and award-winning acting, look somewhere else. Having said that, if you do watch this film you will certainly want to check out the documentary on disc two.
