Plot

A young Scottish doctor heads to Uganda for work and adventure at the same time Idi Amin was rising to power. After tending to a mild injury Amin suffered in an automobile accident, he becomes a friend and advisor to the leader. As time goes on, he not only sees Amin for who he is, but must try to escape before it's too late.

A quick history lesson; Amin took over the rule of Uganda in 1971 via a military coup and remained in control until late 1979. His behavior was somewhat unstable and due to his insecurity, was responsible for the murder of over 300,000 Ugandans.

Pros

Forest Whitaker correctly won an Oscar for his role as Amin; he has this ability to not only express emotions effectively but to effortlessly switch from one emotion to another. McAvoy does an admirable job as the young naive doctor from Scotland. The movie was filmed in Uganda and since it hasn't been that long since Amin was ruler (30 years) there are still a lot of people to get information from. This is a very interesting look at a controversial leader that hasn't had much coverage over the years. Many of the events in this film are either historically correct or partially so; yes, they even included the hostage situation at Entebbe.

Cons

This is a work of fiction (the doctor never existed) intermixed with fact. To find out which is which you'll want to check out the extras. Speaking of extras, why were there so few? This would have been a great opportunity to include a long documentary about Idi Amin and more interviews/making of spots. If you're a big X-Files fan and are only watching this to see Gillian Anderson, she plays a small role in this film (probably on screen for less than 20 minutes towards the beginning).

Extras

  • 7 Deleted Scenes With Optional Commentary by Kevin MacDonald
  • Exclusive Documentary: "Capturing Idi Amin"
  • "Forest Whitaker Idi Amin" Featurette
  • Fox Movie Channel Presents "Casting Session - The Last King of Scotland"

Recommendation

Very well done and has been added to my to-watch-again-soon list. Even though the story is told through the eyes of someone that never existed, it is a good look at Uganda and their infamous leader. Two thumbs up for Forest Whitaker! As the 'R' rating suggests, this film was not intended for a young audience.
