Plot

A telling of the story of King Arthur unlike the rest; this is a realistic version without the magic and sorcery. The names are the same but some characters, like Merlin and Guinevere, have been transformed to fit reality. Arthur and his men are given one last and suicidal task by the Romans to attain their freedom. By the end it becomes another "Good vs Evil" flick.

Pros

It's a fun story but the strength of this movie is the stunning visuals. The colors are sharp and crisp as opposed to bright and "fantastic"; no chrome armor in this movie. The battle scenes were very well done but a bit graphic for children; think "Braveheart" on a smaller but still bloody/violent scale.

Cons

This movie lacks the fantasy quality that other films about this legend possessed. If you're looking for the cute and bubbly Kiera Knightley that you watched in the Pirates of the Caribbean movies, she plays a different role here; though she still retains her beauty when they don't have her covered in filth; even when she's painted like a pixie. The extras are interesting but thin; a two-disc edition with the second full of extras would have been more welcomed.

According to IMDB, Ms. Knightley asked that her breasts be digitally enhanced on the movie posters. Was this the vanity of a nineteen year old woman or was it done to attract men to the movie?

Extras

  • Director Commentary
  • Alternate Ending "Badon Hill", With Optional Director Commentary
  • Blood On The Land: Forging "King Arthur"
  • Cast and Filmmaker Round Table
  • "Knight Vision" Trivia Track
  • Producer's Photo Gallery
  • Konami's King Arthur Playable XBox Demo

Recommendation

A fun film that would have been better if not based on the legend of King Arthur. If, like me, you are a fan of the A&E Horatio Hornblower series, you will be pleased to see two of the main actors in those films starring in this one. For the most part, critics didn't care for this film but it is better than most of them gave it credit for. Don't forget the proverb that "The enemy of my enemy is my friend".
