Plot

The main plot for the remake is identical to the original The Hills Have Eyes that was done in 1977. The same family consisting of a father (an ex-cop), a mother (a nagging but loving wife), a daughter/husband/infant combination, a son, another young daughter and two German Shepherds (the least annoying members of this group) are heading into the desert on their 25th wedding anniversary. Now they’re not looking for a silver mine, they’re heading into the desert because that’s what pop wants to do. They have a wreck and are stranded in the middle of nowhere (this time the wreck wasn’t accidental, it was part of a trap). The desert still has occupants and the movie leaves no doubt that they have been inflicted with radiation poison from military nuclear testing.

Pros

This movie has a larger budget and has been able to add things that the first movie couldn’t; like what the son-in-law found at the end of the road (think Wrong Turn). The picture this time around is much sharper. Also, for those of you that have seen the original, you have the advantage of being able fast forward through the slow sections without fear of missing anything.

Cons

It’s too bad they couldn’t have gotten some of the original actors involved. Having Dee Wallace-Stone play one of the "mutants" would have been fun (for that matter she could have played the mom, it has been 30 years and she’s still active in the business). This movie simply replaces the eeriness of the original with violence and gore.

Recommendation

It all depends on what you’re looking for. If it’s late at night and you’re hunting for a creepy movie, stick with the original (there’s something about an older and less clean picture that adds to the suspense). If you’re hunting for a hack and slash with lots of pick axe violence and gallons of blood, then look no further than this remake.
