Plot

Hellboy is back and, strong as ever, to defeat, you guessed it, "The Golden Army". An evil Elvin Prince is determined to break a centuries old pact between humans and the other creatures of the world in an effort to wipe out the human race. To do so, he needs three pieces of a crown to reanimate the undefeatable Golden Army that was built for them by a goblin. (Elves? Goblins? What's the name of this film again?)

Pros

This film has a better storyline than the first and all the characters play a more pivotal role as opposed to just being supporting cast for the big red guy (especially Selma Blair's character). The video is extremely sharp and the audio will, if you let it, shake your house. Like the original, there are lots of fight scenes and fortunately in this case, they all take place out of water. The humor and over-the-top gunplay is still alive and well. And, if you want to scare your kids so that they don't want the tooth fairy to visit, this is the right film.

Cons

If you were to randomly pick a scene and then ask someone to guess what you were watching, don't be surprised if they picked a film from one of the following franchises: "Lord of the Rings", "Men in Black", "The Mummy" or "Star Wars". It was weird during these scenes thinking "I've seen this before". And, once again, they decided to make a 100 minute movie into a 120 minute movie; they really should base the length of a film on the material they have as opposed to forcing the material to fit a specified time length.

Recommendation

If you liked the first film you should like this even more. It's much of the same except the budget for this one was obviously much larger and it shows. But, like the first film, it's a little too long and when it was finished, I couldn't remember anything about it that stood out. This is a good popcorn & beverage flick to enjoy with your friends, nothing more.
