Plot |
A small demon boy is rescued after the evil Nazis conjure him up in 1944. He grows up to be, you guessed it, Hellboy; a "superhero" that spends his life working for a secret department of the CIA fighting paranormal evil.

Pros |
This is a well shot film with a number of good one-liners. The special effects were better than I was expecting and Ron Pearlman was the perfect actor for Hellboy. If you like action scenes you will not be disappointed. |
Cons |
First off, this movie is too long. I like long movies as long as they keep my interest and this did not. Shave it down to about 96 minutes and tighten it up a little bit (and I know just the right fight scenes to remove; the subterranean one and the last and completely unnecessary one) and this could have been a really good film. Poor Selma Blair looked like she was asleep the entire movie, thanks to the director. The plot was just too broken up and, in places, just doesn't make sense. For example, towards the end Hellboy has to make a decision about his girlfriend that, a little while later, we find out he really didn't have to make and he knew it. |

Recommendation |
I've never read comic books so I can’t compare this movie to its comic book. This is a fun movie that has its moments but don't be shocked if you find yourself looking at your watch from time-to-time. And if you're into extras, there’s a very detailed 2.5 hour documentary on disc two that will tell you everything concerning this film and how it was made. |
