Plot

Assuming that the 1963 version of "The Haunting" was based on the book, this movie took it a different direction. First off, the invitees are there under false pretenses; instead of being told they're there for a study on fear they're told it's a study on insomnia. "You don't tell the rats they're actually in a maze" is the phrase the doctor (Neeson) uses to justify this. The three volunteers for this movie is a Nell (Taylor), a lady whose past ties back into the house, Theo (Zeta-Jones), a sexy extrovert who's there as eye-candy and performs this role admirably, and Luke (Wilson) who's just there. The four of them stay in a house with a really nasty history and personality.

Pros

Great special effects and I loved what they added to the storyline concerning the past history of the house and it's occupants. On top of that, Zeta-Jones runs around the house in party dresses and short skirts.

Cons

Except for Taylor, the script for everyone else pretty much sucked. Character development and interaction is lame. You'll find yourself saying "that's not what I would have done/said".

Extras

  • Behind the Scenes Feature (it was nice to hear Wilson was injured in this film)
  • Two Theatrical Trailers
  • Cast & Filmaker Bios
  • Production Notes

Recommendation

This is a fun popcorn flick to kick back and enjoy on a lonely Friday night.
