Plot |
Three men are all after the same hidden stash of money and will do anything and go through anyone to get it; the Good (Eastwood), the Bad (Van Cleef) and the Ugly (Wallach). Don't let the title fool you, nobody in this group is a good guy; there are just different degrees of bad.

Pros |
Even though it's filmed in Europe, it truly looks like the American old west with the mountains and deserts. The three leads are perfectly cast and the storyline keeps your attention despite the runtime (they added back an additional 18 minutes that was cut out of the original US release). The musical score is one of the best ever; everyone has heard parts of it at one time or another. Last, but certainly not least, they did an excellent job cleaning up both the picture and sound. |
Cons |
It has a runtime of almost three hours. Sergio Leone, a great director, liked to stretch out scenes for effect. If done today, another director would likely have kept the runtime of this movie to around two hours (or less) just by trimming off the "dead time". |

Recommendation |
This is arguably one of the best westerns ever made; it's the highest ranking western at IMDb. Is it a little long? Yes. Is it too long to enjoy? No. There's almost two hours worth of extras on disc two including some interesting conversations with both Eastwood and Wallach. After listening to them it's pretty amazing nobody got hurt (or worse) on set. I hate easter eggs, I believe we shouldn't have to hunt for material it should be listed in the menu. Having said that, if you click on the left arrow on your remote when your on the main screen of disc two you will find four links to short conversation snippets by both Eastwood and Wallach. If you're a fan of this movie and own the original DVD release, go out and buy this version and use the original DVD as a coaster for your favorite beverage; that's all it's good for now. |
