Plot

Flash Gordon, a New York Jets Quarterback, and a young travel agent are thrust into the near impossible situation of having to fight the evil megalomaniac Ming to save the planet Earth from destruction.

Pros

Bright colors galore, a very good soundtrack from Queen and some eye candy for everyone; Flash for the ladies and plenty of lovely ladies for the guys (1980, when women that didn't have breasts the size of basketballs were still correctly considered beautiful enough for lead roles).

Cons

Lot's of cheese, campy one-liners and some "not-so-good" acting (who would have guessed that a future James Bond would star in this movie). And for a special edition package, where are the extras? According to IMDb, all the main actors are still alive and well so why aren't there some interviews with them? Fly a camera crew to them for an afternoon and interview them if it's too expensive to fly them to you. Let me guess, that's for the next DVD release.

Extras

  • Interview with Artist Alex Ross
  • Interview with Screenwriter Lorenzo Semple Jr.
  • Flash Gordon Serial Episode from 1936 (One Episode Only, Ends in a Cliff Hanger)
  • Trailer

Recommendation

The creators of this film made it to be a fun and carefree so it should be viewed that way. If they weren't making a serious Sci-Fi movie then it shouldn't be compared to one ("Star Wars" came out three years earlier so this was inevitable). This is nothing more than a feel-good movie where the good guys have to defeat the evil empire while not straying away from it's comic book roots. Invite some friends over, pop some popcorn, pass around everyone's favorite beverage then kick back and enjoy.
