Plot

A teenage farm boy mysteriously crosses paths with a dragon egg that leads him down the path of danger and adventure. It's yet another tale of good vs. evil.

Pros

This movies has some very cool special effects (especially it's star the dragon) and a good list of actors including Irons, Malkovich and Weisz (at least her voice).

Cons

Malkovich is damn cool as the evil king but is only on screen for a few minutes. As a whole the story is original but when broken down into sections we have all seen this before; I won't ruin it by giving specific examples, you'll know them when you see them. And, last but not least, in an effort to keep the rating as low as possible for maximum viewing (PG), everything is sanitized including the fight scenes. Name the dragon Puff and have him exude sleeping gas as opposed to fire and maybe even Disney would have picked up this film.

Recommendation

A fun movie little movie that isn't quite grown up. Do not go in expecting the quality and wealth of LOTR; compared to the Fellowship of the Ring, this film has been rushed to keep the runtime down. Think more like "Dragonheart" with up-to-date special effects. This is the first of a trilogy and since this movie made a basketfull of money, there's little doubt the next two will be made. I will give them credit, there are plenty of extras to enjoy if you want to learn more about the film or the author.
