Plot

This movie takes place in the middle of the Atlantic during World War II. The players are a US Destroy and a German Submarine, their captain's strategies and the crews that server under them. It is simply a game of cat and mouse and who, if anyone wins the game.

Pros

There are so many good things about this film that I'm probably leaving something off of the list below:
  • Great script; no side stories or flash backs, everything is about the mission at hand.
  • Perfect casting of the two captains; Curd Jürgens as the U-Boat Captain and Robert Mitchum as the Destroyer Captain.
  • There's plenty of good action and drama; no over the top fight scenes or a submarne full of radical Nazis.
  • The length of the movie is perfect and it is a movie you'll enjoy watching more than once.
  • It doesn't have the typical rah-rah ending.

Cons

A movie like this has a limited audience, largely consisting of men that like WWII movies and the extras are disappointing to say-the-least.

Extras

  • None

Recommendation

If you are fan of WWII movies, this is a must for your DVD collection.

Note: If, like me, you have a one year old Australian Shepherd, or any other really hyper dog, you will not want to put this movie (or any other US Navy movie for that matter) in if they have finally lain down to take a nap. The US Navy has this nasty habit of blowing a whistle into their intercom systems to get the attention of the men on board. Your dog will interpret this as "Woo-Hoo, my owner wants to go out and play ball again". This will put your movie on hold for a good ten minutes or so.
