Plot |
A squad of British Army forces are dropped into Scotland for a training exercise. One thing leads to another until they find themselves surrounded by werewolves with ill intent (like they'd have any other kind of intent). Along the way they pick up a Special Ops Captain that one of the soldiers has a personal history with and a lovely female zoologist that helps save their hides.

Pros |
The acting is quite well-done and there's lots of humor if you pay attention and possess some knowledge of the colorful British dialect. The film does a good job of being more than a typical monsters-eat-people film by letting the audience get to know the people involved. And, as this director did in his more recent films, the storyline continues to evolve even towards the end after much of the action has taken place. I liked the fact that they didn't go CGI with the werewolves and for most of the movie you only see quick glimpses of them; unfortunately when you do get long looks at them they do not impress. |
Cons |
The accents and slang will probably go over the heads of most Americans and when you do get a close-up of the werewolves in the end, they’re not that convincing. They worked with the budget they had but the stiff unmoving werewolf heads didn't do anything for me. And once they finally accepted that the creatures were actually werewolves (this should have been accomplished much earlier than it was, all the clues were there for them to see), then everything else not only falls into place but becomes a bit predictable. |

Recommendation |
I remember watching this film 4-5 years ago and not being all that impressed with it. After watching "The Descent" and "Doomsday", two more recent movies by this director, I decided to revisit this film and I'm glad I did. This is a well thought out movie with a strong cast and lots of violence. If you have rear speakers you will not be disappointed. If you have dogs, you might want to leave them outside while watching this film; all the howling really freaked out my Australian Shepherd. |
