Plot

An American Scholar (Hanks) is in Paris giving a lecture on symbolism. While there, he is asked to accompany the police to the Louvre concerning the murder of it's curator; a person who earlier contacted him to meet for a drink but never showed up. While at the Louvre he meets the man's granddaughter and this is when the fun really starts as they try to solve the murder while staying one step ahead of the law who's convinced of his guilt. They also need to avoid a certain religious group that wants to find and destroy the object they eventually end up seeking; the holy grail.

Pros

Lets start with the cast; Tom Hanks, the very lovely Audrey Tautou, Sir Ian McKellen, Jean Reno and the creepy (at least in this film) Paul Bettany. Now add a script that will keep an audience's attention for 2.5 hours that takes place in some of the most scenic/historic places in Europe. This film sucked me in and kept my attention so thoroughly that I turned around and watched it again that day. Warning: there are many people out there that hate this movie as much as I like it; see below.

Cons

The first half of the film takes place at night, so it's very dark. What I do not understand is why it had to be so dark when they are actually inside buildings (the Louvre, the bank, the Englishman's Chateau, etc)? Will somebody please turn on a friggin light!

Recommendation

I've never read the book so I can not compare it with the movie. When the film first came out, it seemed that the people that loved the book hated the film and those that never read it loved the movie. Of course the Church disliked the film, banning them from filming in Westminster Cathedral, but that's nothing new since the only film I can remember them approving of was, ironically, one of the most violent torture movies ever made and one they would have strongly protested against for that reason alone if the victim would have been anybody else; "The Passion of Christ". Even if you like the book, take a chance and rent this movie some night; what do you have to lose other than a couple of hours?
