Plot |
It's the late 1930s in Fascist Italy and a man, the conformist, is recruited to go to Paris to assassinate a college professor that he used to study under. He takes his lovely bride with him and the befriend the professor and his wife. Will he be able to go through with his assignment?

Pros |
I love the way the movie was filmed; the type of shots and the picture are still stunning all these years later. And since this is a foreign film, you can count on at least a little nudity. |
Cons |
Even though this movie kept my attention from start to finish, it just bounced around too much. One minute you're in the now, the next you could be in any number of different time periods. The problem is you won't know what is what until the very end of the film when at least some of the puzzle pieces fell into place for me. |
Extras |

- "Shadow and Light: Filming The Conformist" Featurette
- "The Conformist: Breaking New Ground" Featurette

Recommendation |
I suspect this is one of those films that film students have to watch and break down. Maybe after a couple more viewings, like I have the time for that now, I'll be able to appreciate it more than I do at the moment. I loved the work this director did later in life and can now understand how he got there. And if you're watching this in English and are concerned when the dubbing stops and the subtitles start, don't be. That was an additional scene that was found and was never dubbed; the English dubbing will kick back in once the scene is over. |
