Plot

As the title implies, this is a movie about how Ben "Bugsy" Siegel moved from the east coast to the west, helped start what is now Las Vegas and how all of this led to his violent death. It goes to great lengths to show what type of person he was and how much he disliked his nickname.

Pros

I'm not a huge Warren Beatty fan, it probably has to do with the fact I'm attracted to women, but he carried this role extremely well (he's always struck me as being smug). He had to be seductive, cruel, passionate, sadistic, vane and a wee bit psycho to pull off this role and he did all of them nicely. And, fortunately for him, they surrounded him with a very strong supporting cast including the person he spends most of his screen time with, Annette Bening (he married her in real life the following year). Add to the list Keitel, Gould, Mantegna and the always commanding Ben Kingsley and it's going to be hard not to pay attention.

Cons

Movies about real people always leave me asking one question when the film ends; what was real and what did the writers make up? And for a "mob" movie, there isn't enough "mob-like-activities" to suit me. This movie basically follows the life and all the drama of one man as told by two writers that never met him.

Extras

  • Never-Before-Seen Deleted Scenes
  • Documentary - The Road To Damascus: The Reinvention Of Bugsy Siegel Featuring Cast interviews Including Warren Beatty and Annette Bening
  • Bugsy Siegel's "Screen Test"

Recommendation

If you like the main stars in this film or are looking for an entertaining drama, this is a good movie. But, if you’re looking for a good crime-heavy and suspenseful mob movie, don’t let the title fool you and look elsewhere.
