Plot

A young Jewish woman is hiding out in Holland from the Nazis. When the home she's hiding in is destroyed she's forced to hide on the run. She joins up with the Resistance and from there is forced into many difficult situations that call for difficult decisions.

Pros

What a ride! This movie has so many plot twists you might want to put on a seatbelt. First off the leading actress is not only beautiful, and guys you will get to see 95% of her beauty, but she is extremely talented; fortunately we'll be able to see her again in "Valkyrie" in 2008. The story takes very little time getting set up before everything starts rolling. I would describe this movie as an action/mystery; the action being obvious and the mystery is who is telling what on whom? The overall question for this film is "What would you be willing to do to survive?". The 2.5 hour runtime flies by.

Cons

The film starts off showing the lead heroine living in Israel in 1956; this eliminates any suspense as to whether or not she survives the war. This is a bit nit-picky since you already know she'll live at least until the very last scene without this information but the added suspense would have been interesting. For everyone that isn't fluent in Dutch, you'll have to live with subtitles. And why, oh why, did we need a full-front/back nudity shot of a fat hairy man? I'm quite sure even the ladies will agree with me on this.

Extras

  • Commentary with Director Paul Verhoeven
  • Making of Featurette

Recommendation

Even if you're not interested in the historical time and events portrayed in this film, you should watch it anyway. It's not only a testament of survival but also shows, at the end, how quickly people that have been treated badly will turn on and treat others the same way. Note, this movie does have, and rightfully so, an 'R' rating; kiddies should leave the room.
