Plot

Watch as Thomas Becket teaches Henry II how to be king and assists him with ruling the nation. The Arch Bishop of Canterbury, a thorn in the king's side, dies and needs to be replaced. Will Henry's decision to name Becket as his replacement work with him or cause him pain?

Pros

Great acting by all involved and a wonderful script; humor interwoven throughout if you're paying attention. I hadn't seen this film in over a decade before they finally released it on DVD, I watched it the first three nights I had this set in my hands. They've done an excellent job cleaning up the picture and even though the extras are thin, they are worth a look.

I rarely listen to commentary tracks but one with Peter O'Toole was too much to pass up on. Though he does tend to stray away from the movie from time-to-time, his commentary is very entertaining and informational; it has been over 40 years since he starred in this film.

Cons

This isn't an action-packed movie with huge battle scenes; it's much more cerebral. As you'll find out in the extras, this isn't historically correct in a number of areas; one is rather important.

Extras

  • Commentary With Peter O'Toole
  • Interviews With Editor Anne V. Cotes and Composer Laurence Rosenthal
  • Archival Interviews With Richard Burton
  • Theatrical Trailer
  • Still Gallery
  • TV Spot

Recommendation

I could spend hours writing about this film but that would take too much time. This is one of the few "can't miss" movies and one of my all-time favorites.
