Plot

An asteroid is heading towards Earth and if it makes it, all life will be destroyed. It's supposed to hit Earth in 18 days. The best NASA can do is send up some oil drillers to drill into the asteroid, fill the holes with nuclear bombs and then detonate before the asteroid gets too close.

Pros

It's a Criterion release so that means this DVD has great video and audio; and for icing on the cake, a great soundtrack. Definitely take the time to read the goofs and trivia sections at IMDB. This very eclectic cast of actors works for this film and, if you take the time to notice, much of the acting is very good.

Cons

If you can't watch a movie without hunting for errors, either factual or filming, you will be very busy. This isn't a "NASA: How We're Going to Destroy a Asteroid" instructional video; it a freaking movie!

Extras

  • Commentary Featuring Director Michael Bay, Producer Jerry Druckheimer, Bruce Willis and Ben Affleck

Recommendation

Simply put, this is a Rah Rah feel good movie with all the essentials; man doing the impossible to save the world, love stories, making up for lost time and a happy ending but one that comes with a price. So, if you're in the mood, put this in your DVD player and enjoy the ride; if not, find something else to watch. Don't hunt for any deep or hidden meanings in this film. Many reviews on the Internet rip this movie to shreds; mostly because those reviewers seem to have forgotten that this is nothing more than entertainment. And if you get the chance, take a few minutes to check out the blooper real on disc 2.
