A true story about captured African slaves that escape their chains on a boat and murder most of the crew. They stumble across an American Military ship that recaptures them and throws them into prison until their day(s) in court. Should they be set free or turned back over to their supposed owners?

Simply look at the cast. What might surprise you the most is that the best performance given in this movie wasn't by Hopkins or Freeman, it was Hounsou's. This is a very interesting and disturbing look back at the early days of US history.

Two and one half hours. The last half of the movie moves along at a really good pace, the first half not so much. The opening twenty minutes was partially included in a flashback later in the movie. Twenty to thirty minutes could have easily been shaved off this version and nothing would have been lost. Last but not least, where are all of the extras that we would normally get for a movie of this caliber?

At times this isn't an easy movie to watch, but it should be seen anyway. Movies that evoke emotion and make you think should never be ignored. Even though I believe it's a bit long, I now know where to hit the fast forward button on my remote when I watch this again; and I will.
