Plot
Twenty German students rush off to World War One in defense of the "Fatherland" after an arousing speech from one of their instructors. This film follows the group from basic training until the end. |
Pros
Great story that pulls no punches about the horror of war. A lot of explosions for a movie filmed in 1930; I wouldn’t be surprised if there were a lot of injuries or even a death or two during filming. Once the opening credits are finished, the film looks quite sharp considering its age. |
Cons
It’s over 75 years old so, as with most films this age, some of the acting is way over-the-top (remember it hadn’t been very long since all movies were without audio). The movie flowed fairly well from start-to-finish but you will still find yourself glancing at your watch or the dvd timer a time or two before it’s over. |

Recommendation
The world’s first anti-war film. Certainly an incredible piece of work; the first "War is Hell" film from the perspective of the foot soldier. This should be on every DVD collector's shelf. |
