Plot

In 2011 an industrial virus kills 99% of the world. A scientist, Trevor Goodchild (Csokas) develops a cure. The five million survivors now lived in the walled city of Bregna, the last city on Earth. It is now 2411 and the Goodchild dynasty still rules but all is not well. Citizens are disappearing and there is a group of rebels led by The Handler (McDormand) and who’s strongest warrior is Æon Flux (Theron). Their goal is to bring down the Goodchild dynasty.

Pros

The major reason for this movies success is selecting Charlize Theron to play the lead role. They needed an actress of her talent (and don’t get me wrong, she looks good too) to pull this off. If they had done the typical "Hollywood" thing and hired a "looker" whose bra size was greater than her IQ, this would have bombed for everyone but teenage boys.

Having gotten that out of the way, this is what else you have to look forward to. The story is always evolving and isn’t as predictable as many movies are. There are numerous twists throughout and is more complex than I was expecting. The colors used are vivid for those of you with HD TVs. The special effects are very well done but the movie isn’t all about them. And last, but not least, throw in a very good supporting cast.

BTW, if you’re feeling a sense of deja vu while watching this movie, this is possible if you’ve ever visited Berlin. The movie was filmed in it’s entirety at different locations throughout the city. For more details, check out The Locations featurette.

Cons

For those fans of the MTV animated series that expected to see Charlize Theron in the same costume as the cartoon, sorry guys. She is wearing more than a thong and a couple pieces of string. If you can't figure out why that wasn't feasible for an action film, watch the Costume Design featurette.

In case you couldn't tell, I really enjoyed this movie. It has something for everyone, you don't have to be a Sci-Fi junkie to enjoy it. And hey, there's even a love story for the ladies.
